Religion and prayer was an essential part of the daily life of Native Americans. Symbolism was also important in their ceremonies, clothing, weapons and art. Eagle feathers in the hair of a warrior were only to be worn for deeds of bravery, such as slaying an enemy or “counting coup” on an enemy. His buffalo robe has decorative quill work on it. The cross within a circle tells of the four winds, while the crooked lines inside the band tells of lightning and thunder that would bring him swiftness and strength. This sculpture is the larger finished one being created by the cowboy artist in “ A Portrait Of The Past”.
