In the world of ranches and the cattle and horse industries, there are vast differences in the clothes, hats, spurs and much of the horse gear prefered, as well as even the words cowhands call themselves. The differences have evolved from the variations in climate, terrain, plant life and neighboring cultures. Most the cowboys of Nevada, California, Oregon & Idaho refer to themselves as “Buckaroos”, while in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico they call themselves “Cowpunchers”. In Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and the Dakotas is where you find the self-proclaimed “Cowboys”. Each of these groups of horse and cattlemen can easily be recognized for the distinct look they proudly proclaim. Bill’s depiction of this classic “Buckaroo”, expresses the pride and attitude these horsemen are known for; with his short chaps (Chinks), fancy wrist cuffs, flat brimmed hat with the long braided Stampede string, large scarf or “Wild Rag”, and spurs with “ginglebobs”. To the Buckaroo, horses are premier in their work, while cattle are considered most useful as a training tool for his horse. With the flip of his rope and the way he carries himself across the corral, you can see him say, “here comes a Horseman”.
