Whether you are capturing wild horses or gathering wild cattle, a working cowboy often has to plan some sort of strategy. The cowboys would study the country and watch where the animals usually make their escapes. This might be a trail dropping off into a canyon, or up and over a saddle pass between two mountains, or into or behind a large stand of scrub oak or mesquite. The next time the cowboy and his partner would secretly lay low and wait, for when the animals run past. As one cowboy spooks them, the other rider would be ready with his rope, at the point where the horses or cattle usually make their escape, and he would be successful at; “springin the trap”.
